We wanted to tackle a highly debated topic, should you let your dog sleep in your bed? At Linen Chest, we care for the whole family - fur babies included - so we’re bringing you the pros and cons of letting your dog snuggle with you at night.

If you’re a dog owner, you’ve probably heard well-meaning advice from both sides of the debate. But what should you actually do?

The Pros:
Beyond spending extra time with your little loved one, there are studies that indicate having your dog in your bed might actually improve your sleep. Co-sleeping can ease anxiety, increase feelings of comfort and companionship, decrease feelings of loneliness, and warm you up on cold nights.

It’s not just about feeling safe at night - although that is also a perk. Being near a dog actually increases the hormone oxytocin, which is associated with happiness. Their little snoring might help cheer you up, too!

This comforting feeling isn’t one-sided. Your dog can get great comfort from falling asleep next to you. It’s basically one big calming effect for everyone involved.

The Cons:
There seems to be a lot of misinformation about the consequences of having your dog sleep so close to you. There is a fear-narrative of contracting diseases or parasites, but it seems this is only in rare cases. If you and your dog are healthy, and you are up-to-date with vet appointments, there is minimal risk.

If your dog shows signs of aggression, reactivity, or being territorial - it might be better to have your dog sleep on a dog bed or in their crate. Sleeping in your bed does not seem to cause these issues but they might become worse if they already exist.

Sleep cycles differ between humans and dogs, so you might find your quality of sleep to be affected - but keep in mind the studies mentioned above that show your sleep may improve.

Dirt, fur and drool might also sway your decision. As well as the size of your dog. It’s one thing to have a 10-pound poodle in your bed, and an entirely different thing to have an 80-pound Bernese Mountain Dog. Although, they do make for excellent cuddlers.

Overall, if your dog is healthy and shows no signs of aggressive or territorial behaviours, and sleeps through the night, there is a good chance having your dog in your bed will benefit both of you.

Ultimately, it is up to you to decide what’s right for you and your dog.
