On March 8th, women will be celebrated all over the world while we continue to fight for equal rights.

For International Women’s Day, we thought it might be nice to share a few ideas on how to celebrate the women around you. It doesn’t have to be a huge gesture, even the smallest tokens of appreciation can go a long way.

Here are four simple ways to celebrate the women in your life.

1. Write them a Card
Putting your appreciation into words can be an incredibly uplifting experience for both the giver and the receiver. Simply purchase (or make) a card that says “Thank You” on the front and fill the inside with a special note. It can be as short as a single line or you can cover the entire card in text. Tell a few people how grateful you are and how they’ve positively impacted your life. Your words will mean so much to them and we bet they’ll keep the memento for a long time.

2. Host a Movie Night
Invite a few of your closest female friends for a night of relaxation at your home. Tell everyone to wear their most comfortable clothes and to bring their favourite snack. Make some popcorn, choose a comedy or action movie, and enjoy hanging out with the powerful women you’ve invited over. It’s not a night to dress up, it’s a night to chill out and unwind.

3. Pick Up the Phone
With every passing year, it becomes easier to lose touch with certain people. Is there someone you haven’t spoken to in a while? Maybe someone moved cities or changed jobs and you’ve lost contact? Pick up the phone and call them! Check-in and see how they are doing - it’s a great way to let someone know “I’m thinking of you.” Maybe it will reconnect your friendship or maybe you’ll remain distant friends, but it is always nice to hear a familiar voice. Don’t know where to start your conversation? Wish them a happy International Women’s Day!

4. Plan a Female-Only Sports Game
Get active on March 8th by planning a female-only sports game. Round up some friends and friends-of-friends and organize a scrimmage game or two. If you have enough women, you can organize a mini-tournament! Playing a team sport is a great way to change up your routine, enjoy some camaraderie and break a little sweat. Consider reaching out to local universities to use their sports complexes for your event. If you’re up for it, you can charge a “play fee” that goes directly to support a local women’s shelter or organization.

It’s important to celebrate women all year round but take this annual reminder as an opportunity to do something a little different to show your appreciation.
