Soaking melamine in warm soapy water prior to washing is a great way to extend the life and good looks of melamine dinnerware
Melamine cleans easily in high-temperature and chemical dishwashers
Food debris should be wiped off prior to entering a dishwasher
High-protein foods should be wiped off dishware before washing to prevent the buildup of the proteins, which over time will darken and look like a stain
If a film, stain develops, soak the melamine in warm sudsy water for 20 minutes, then wipe the stain with a warm sponge, the protein deposit should wipe away with ease, continue to wash as usual
Like ceramic and glass, melamine has a strong high gloss surface which will scratch from use of serrated knives. Use of serrated knives on melamine is not recommended. Continued use of serrated knives will cause a patina to develop that will dull the surface of the ware
Melamine is not appropriate for use in a microwave or under a heat lamp over 212 °C
