Do you know how to maintain and clean your mattress? Linen Chest sleep experts reveal everything you need to know to keep it clean and fresh for a more healthy sleep.

Before You Begin:

The best way to keep your mattress clean is by covering it with a mattress protector to help reduce stains and the need for frequent mattress cleaning!

How to Clean Your Mattress

Proper mattress cleaning is essential to help prolong its life and to help minimize the accumulation of dust and mites. Before cleaning, refer to the specific manufacturer's recommendations on the product label.

Simple Ways to Regularly Maintain Your Mattress:

1. If there are stains, treat them first (keep reading for a complete how-to on removing stains). Vacuum the entire surface of the mattress using a fabric-cleaning attachment. Remember the sides and seams!

2. If your mattress has an unpleasant odour, sprinkle it with baking soda and let it sit for up to 24 hours.

3. Remove the baking soda using a vacuum.

4. Flip the mattress and repeat the process on the other side.

How Often Should You Clean Your Mattress?

We recommend you clean your mattress twice a year if covered with a mattress protector. If you don't have one, cleaning your mattress once a season (or four times a year) is best.

Good to know:

In the past, mattresses needed to be flipped periodically, but more recent models no longer need to be flipped at all. This applies to all mattresses sold at Linen Chest!

How to Remove Stains from a Mattress

Discover the best practices and steps to follow to eliminate stains from a mattress. Just like regular cleaning, always refer to the manufacturer's recommendations before you begin.

The 4 Golden Rules for Cleaning a Mattress Stain:

1. Only spray enough to moisten the stain. It’s important to avoid large amounts of liquid as it could cause mold formation.
2. Blot, never rub. Always gently blot the liquid by pressing down firmly with a sponge or cloth. Rubbing the stain could make it penetrate deeper.
3. Act as soon and as quickly as possible. Fresh stains are easier to clean. Dried stains are more likely to leave a permanent mark.
4. Always use cold water. The cold water helps dissolve dirt and prevents it from embedding in the fabric.

The Most Effective Way to Clean Mattress Stains:

Are you dealing with blood, sweat, or urine stains on your mattress? There are commercial stain removers designed specifically for that purpose, but you can also make your own cost-effective cleaning solution using ingredients you probably already have on hand!

1. Mix equal parts cold water and white vinegar.
2. Blot the soiled area to absorb the excess.
3. Shake well and spray the cleaning solution on the stain.
4. For urine or sweat stains: Let the solution penetrate the mattress (urine: 10 minutes, sweat: 20 minutes).
5. Blot the solution with a sponge or clean cloth.
6. Sprinkle baking soda to help absorb moisture and eliminate any odour. Let it sit for 1 to 8 hours (sweat: 24 hours).
7. Remove the baking soda with a vacuum cleaner.
8. Allow your mattress to dry completely before putting your bedding back on.
